Net Metering

Ontario has opened the electricity market to safe and clean renewable energy. The net metering program is designed to help you participate in this clean energy future – and manage your energy costs.

This program is available to any hydro users who generate electricity primarily for their own use from a renewable source (wind, water, solar radiation or agricultural biomass) using equipment with a total nameplate rating of 500Kw or less.

What is Net Metering?

Ontario’s net metering regulations allow you to send electricity generated from renewable sources to the electrical grid for a credit toward your electricity costs.

How it Works

Your utility provider will subtract the value of electricity you supplied to the grid from the value of what you take from the grid. What you’ll see on your bill is the “net” difference between these two amounts.

Excess generation credits can be carried forward for up to 11 months, including the 11th month, to offset any future electricity costs.

Net Metering means you no longer need to purchase expensive batteries or a backup generator – or factor these costs into the price of installing a renewable energy generation system.
